The Stream is a brand-new coming-of-age film slated to premiere Tuesday August 26, 2014 at the Boys & Girls Club LA Harbor, with a simultaneous release on iTunes and in Walmart. It stars Mario Lopez, Kelly Rutherford, Rainn Wilson and Christopher Gorham.
According to the press release, “A long time ago, in the summer of 1981, a tragedy of epic proportions sends five friends on an epic adventure. All they have to do is follow The Stream and back. What could possibly go wrong? Encountering bullies, a nasty storm and mystical creatures, the friends will need the force of friendship to prevail.”
What is unique about this movie is that the children from the Boys and Girls Club of America acted as crew, handling everything from lighting to editing to operating the boom mics. Also, a full 80 percent of the revenue (meaning, the gross) will go directly back to benefit the Boys and Girls Club…showing that the filmmakers are putting their money where their mouths are when it comes to supporting charity.
We got the chance to ask a few questions of one the actors in the film, Louis Stancil, who plays Julius. He has been acting for 8 years and is originally from Baltimore, MD.
Tell us about The Stream and your character in it?
The Stream is a fun, comedy movie for kids and parents. A long time ago… in the summer of 1981, a tragedy of epic proportions sends five friends on an epic adventure. All they have to do is follow The Stream and back. What could possibly go wrong? Encountering bullies, a nasty storm and mystical creatures, the friends will need the force of friendship to prevail. I portray Julius, the bully henchman in the film.
What makes this movie unique?
The Dreaming Tree Foundation partnered with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the #1 youth charity, to make a feature film called The Stream and raise millions of dollars for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s efforts to fight back against the high school drop out epidemic which claims 7,000 teens every day — 1 million teens every year. Every theater ticket, every DVD that’s ordered, every rental or download, is actually a donation that will go right back to fund Boys & Girls Clubs of America! 80% of all the revenues (not profits, revenues) go to the BGCA!
Tell us about working with the kids from Boys and Girls Club of America. Any memorable moments?
It was awesome! Being on set with young teens/kids created positive energy all around.
What was the best part about shooting The Stream?
I would say meeting the new crew members (B&GC) each week! Kept the momentum going.
Why should teens watch this movie?
Over 200 Boys & Girls Clubs of America teens from all over the United States, got the unique chance to work on our all youth film crew to produce, film and edit The Stream, a family comedy. Teens from all ages and backgrounds brought their unique perspectives and talents to the production. Many teens had never picked up a camera before let alone dreamt of making a feature film so Dreaming Tree Foundation enlisted the help of Dreaming Tree alumni to serves as on-set mentors, providing teens with training, instruction and encouragement. Also, because its an AWESOME movie… lol.
