Fears That Are More Common Than You Think

Are you scared of something that seems irrational? Do you think you are weird for having a specific phobia? Chances are you likely aren’t alone. People have a vast array of phobias, and while the most common ones are usually heights, darkness, death, and public speaking, there are many others out there that people can relate to.

Fear of Flying

In a way, it makes a lot of sense that people would be scared of flying. It’s very similar to heights in that you are high up. With movies sensationalizing plane crashes as fairly common, it only adds to the anxiety many individuals feel when they head to the airport.

However, flying is actually one of the safest forms of transportations. Crashing is highly unlikely. But this doesn’t fix the fear on its own. If you are particularly anxious before you head out on vacation, you may want to reach out to your doctor to see what can be done to reduce your symptoms.

Fear of the Dentist

Yet another common life procedure that a lot of people just can’t stand. About 5% to 8% of Americans avoid the dentist because they are afraid. While doctors’ visits of any kind can be nerve-wracking. The dentist in particular can bring a lot more anxiety to the table because of their sharp tools and the grinding on your teeth. Tooth pain doesn’t help either.

If you are hoping to reduce your fear when you go for an appointment, be candid with the dentist. Explain to them that you are nervous to visit very often, and that that’s why you don’t come often. The dentist may be able to put procedures in place to help you throughout your visit.

Fear of Needles

Trypanophobia—the fear of needles—has come up in conversation much more often. While part of this has to do with vaccinations, needles in general are some people’s worst nightmare. While it may seem like a less practical thing than flying or dentistry, the fear of needles impacts people every day.

People who don’t like needles often avoid vaccinations, which in the climate of COVID-19’s aftermath, is kind of a problem. Fortunately, most people are able to get away from interacting with needles in most other circumstances. But it is a pretty common phobia.

Overall, these are just a few of the common phobias out there. But there are plenty more. If you have something similar to one of these, check out online for support groups and medical professionals who can help you through your challenges.
